2010 ‘Engine of the Year’ trophies for TSI technology


The much sought-after ‘Engine of the Year Award’ has been won by Volkswagen – the tenth time already that the Group has taken the cherished trophy back to Wolfsburg. Entered in the competition this year was Volkswagen’s new 1.4 TSI engine and it won not only in the 1 to 1.4-litre category, but also took the overall award as ‘International Engine of the Year’.

Volkswagen Group Australia has officially crowned the winner of the 2009 Volkswagen Dealer of the Year Awards at a gala event in Sydney on Saturday. Ms Anke Koeckler, Volkswagen Group Australia’s Managing Director, presented the award to the National Dealer of the Year – Mr Lou Papile, Dealer Principal of Burwin Volkswagen, Victoria. A total of six awards including regional categories as well as the overall Commercial Vehicle Dealer of the Year and the National Dealer of the Year were also announced.

The new Golf Wagon has finally been released in Australia, leading Volkswagen into the wagon market. It carries the same current “design DNA” styling as seen in the rest of our current range, with clear horizontal lines and bold highlights. The range offers two petrol and two diesel engine options, all fulfilling the Euro 5 emissions standards. The Volkswagen Golf has been awarded the 2009 Wheels magazine Car of the Year. The multi-award winning Golf has outclassed a field of 22 cars to collect what is widely considered to be Australia’s most coveted award. To have been selected for this award, the Golf had to impress eight judges over an extensive week of testing. Wheels magazine editor, Ged Bulmer, said: “The turbo-charged, five-door hatch Volkswagen range is outstanding. “The Golf oozes sophistication, refinement and development – in an energetic package that comes with fundamentally good steering and balance.”

Triumphant title defence in South America: Volkswagen has won the legendary Dakar Rally for the second time in succession. After a ‘showdown in blue’ the Volkswagen duos and their TDI powered Race Touareg prototypes celebrated a one-two-three podium lockout at the finish of the toughest challenge worldwide in motorsport. In the process. The Wolfsburg based brand therefore remains the only manufacturer to have won the car category of the Dakar Rally with diesel power. In addition to the efficiency of the Volkswagen Group’s diesel direct injection technology the Race Touareg’s reliability was the key to the 2010 “Dakar” victory.

Powered by a sophisticated and efficient new diesel 1.6-litre engine, the five-speed manual Golf 77TDI can cover 100km with 4.9-litres on the ADR 81/02 combined cycle. Highway running consumption drops to just 4.3-litres per 100km. With a potential range of well over 1,100km, the new diesel Golf not only delivers its occupants in comfort and safety to their destination but at minimal expense. It produces peak power of 77kW at 4,400rpm, while maximum torque of 250Nm is delivered between 1,500-2,500rpm. Two transmissions are on offer, a five-speed manual and a seven-speed DSG.

100,000th Volkswagen Golf sold in Australia


The Volkswagen brand has just reached a significant milestone on the Australian market with the sale of the 100,000th Golf since the initial model introduction. The celebratory new Golf 118TSI was handed over to its proud owner, Mark Hall, by Solitaire Volkswagen Hawthorn in Adelaide. Judging by the humble beginnings of the MkI in 1976, which at the time was assembled locally in Clayton, Victoria, nobody could have preempted the significance of this truly iconic model. Wheels Magazine recognised the significance of the Golf when it was named Wheel’s Car of the Year in 1976, 4,429 Golfs were sold that year.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles builds one millionth T5


One million T5s have been built since the start of production in March 2003. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles produced the one millionth vehicle of the T5 series on 30th June at the Hanover plant. The vehicle is a Transporter Van 1.9 l TDI 62 kW in Tornado Red. "The T5 is and remains the number one in its segment for new registrations in Europe and Germany", emphasised Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles during the celebrations at the Hanover plant.

At the 56th International Advertising Festival “Cannes Lions 2009”, Europe’s largest automaker was presented with its first Lion in the “Advertiser of the year” category – thus receiving the highest accolade in the advertising industry. Volkswagen has been presented with around 150 “advertising Oscars” in Cannes since 1961. “By honouring Volkswagen today we are honouring a company that has been a symbol of creative and innovative marketing in the automobile industry for decades,” Terry Savage, Festival Chairman, said during the award ceremony.

The Golf captivated 51 of the 59 jurors from 25 diffrent countries: the overwhelming majority of panel members voted the model 'World Car of the Year'.
