The Passat was first introduced in 1973 and launched locally in 1974. In its Australian debut year, the Passat won Wheels Magazine’s 1974 "Car of the Year" award. Now in its 6th generation it is our longest selling model, and continues to win many of the industry’s most prestigious awards.

Recently, the Passat beat strong competition to be awarded the 2007 “Best Family Car” trophy by ‘WHATCAR?’ magazine in the UK. The judges praised the Passat’s engines, handling, safety record, luxury and value for money.

In 2006, the Passat was recognised by noted automotive firm AutoPacific as the top-ranking vehicle for the Premium Mid-Size Car Category. The class leading Volkswagen’s winning result was based on outstanding interior design, high touch materials and driving dynamics.

In the same year, the Passat was awarded the “Gelber Engel” prize in Germany by that country’s ADAC Motor Club, (similar to the NRMA or RACV in Australia). The decision to award the coveted prize in the ‘Car’ category was based on a popular verdict, calculated from the 320,000 votes by club members.

In 2005, the widely lauded Passat also took the renowned ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ prize, awarded by Germany’s ‘Bild am Sonntag’ newspaper. The jury, made up of VIPs, technical experts, and professional racing and rally drivers found the Passat’s dynamic qualities to be just as outstanding as its design, equipment and comfort.
