Origins

The Volkswagen Tiguan was first announced as a concept vehicle at the November 2006 Los Angeles International Auto Show. The Tiguan production series was later released at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Naming Process

As part of Volkswagen’s marketing strategy, the name Tiguan was chosen by the public through the ‘Auto Bild’ group, with over 350,000 voters from several European countries through Auto Bild's magazines and websites. The other possible names were ‘Namib’, ‘Rockton’, ‘Samun’ and ‘Nanuk’. Tiguan is a combination of the words ‘Tiger’ and ‘Leguan’ (‘Leguan’ is German for ‘Iguana’).

Technology

Technology

The Tiguan’s numerous cutting edge technologies include the world’s first Park Assist system to be implemented on an SUV. This optional feature enables automated steering functionality while reversing into a parking space parallel to the road. You simply control the accelerator pedal, brake and clutch while the Tiguan steers into a pre-measured space under sensor control. Whenever you manually intervene in the steering process, the Park Assist function is deactivated.

Engines

The Tiguan will be the first SUV in the world to arrive on the market exclusively with charged diesel and petrol engines. The advantage: greater power and torque, better fuel economy and lower emissions. The new and remarkably quiet common rail turbo diesel engine comes standard with a diesel particulate filter.
