Brakes are an important safety feature of every Volkswagen that enables you to slow or stop your vehicle at any given moment. The life of your brake pads greatly depends on your individual driving style or the environment you drive in.

If you regularly use the brakes hard, the lifetime will be reduced and vice versa. In the interest of safety, if you notice any of the following, visit your Volkswagen Service Centre as soon as possible:
▪ The brake pedal becomes spongy.
▪ The brake pedal is pushed to the floor before taking affect.
▪ Under braking you notice shuddering, jolting or the vehicle pulling to one side.
▪ Unusual squeaking, grinding or unfamiliar noises while braking.

Brake fluid transfers the pressure applied to the brake pedal to each of the wheels that activates the brake pads onto the disks or drums which in turn slow or stop the vehicle. Brake fluid is a specialised liquid designed to withstand extreme conditions and temperature variations. Over time moisture is absorbed from the surrounding air. During hard braking or high operating temperatures the brake fluid can overheat reducing the brakes effectiveness.

Your vehicles braking system should be checked and maintained at regular service intervals. A brake fluid reservoir is located underneath the bonnet. Please refer to your owners handbook for exact location. The brake fluid level can be visually inspected. If the fluid level is below the minimum marker, refer to your owners handbook or your local Volkswagen Service Centre.
