Engines

Volkswagen engines contain many moving parts, and like all mechanical componentry, require a certain level of maintenance. A well serviced engine gives you the benefit of improved fuel efficiency as well as maximum reliability and an enhanced resale value. By following some simple tips you will promote the longevity of your vehicles engine.

Coolant

Your vehicles engine cooling system is one of the most important aspects that ensure your Volkswagen runs at its optimal performance. Coolant fluid is a complex liquid solution designed to cool your engine. Without sufficient coolant, you dramatically increase your chances of severely damaging the engine.

To avoid damage some important points can be noted

- Regularly check your vehicles cooling levels, and check for leaks from hoses and connections.
- Never mix different coolant products. In emergency situations plain water can be used until the recommended
coolant is available.
- The cooling system must be filled with a mixture of water and at least 40% of genuine Volkswagen coolant additive.
- Remove any visible debris such as rubbish, grass from the front of the radiator because this will reduce the radiators cooling ability.
- To correctly top up your vehicles coolant please refer to your owners handbook for details.
- Caution: Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Severe burns to the face, hands and body can occur.

Oil

A special high quality multigrade oil is put into the engine at the factory. Oil is the vital lubricant in your vehicles engine that reduces the friction between the moving components. It is important to use your vehicles recommended oil to ensure the engines smooth running. Your owners' handbook or your local Volkswagen dealer will inform you on the correct oil to use for your vehicle. Over time engine oil looses its lubricating properties and turns a dark black. To avoid harm to your engine you should adhere to your vehicles service schedule which can be found in your owners handbook. It is normal for the engine to consume a certain amount of engine oil depending on how you drive and the conditions in which the car is used. For this reason, oil level must be checked at regular intervals, preferably when filling the fuel tank and before a journey. When the below symbols illuminate on the dash panel please observe the following.
Engine Oil level warning lamp

When warning lamp lights up -check the engine oil level as soon as possible and top up with oil if necessary. If warning lamp flashes, take the vehicle to a qualified workshop and have the oil level sensor checked.
Engine oil pressure too low

If this warning lamp starts to flash, and is accompanied by three acoustic warnings, switch off the engine and check the engine oil level. Failure to observe the warning lamps and the associated descriptions and warning texts could result in injury or damage to the vehicle.

Checking your vehicles oil level

- Before checking your vehicles oil level, ensure the vehicle is positioned on level ground, the engine is turned off and the handbrake is applied.
- Before you open the bonnet, make sure that the windscreen wiper arms are in contact with the windscreen. Failure to do so could damage the paintwork and the vehicle.
- We recommend that the engine is cold when this check is performed.
- If the engine is warm after turning the engine off, wait a few moments for the oil to settle.
- Before opening the bonnet, read and observe any warnings or safety instructions on working in the engine compartment found in your owners handbook.
- Before opening the bonnet ensure the window wiper blades are resting on the bottom of the windscreen.
- Pull the bonnet release level located under the dash panel.
- Lift the bonnet using the release lever.
- Pull out the oil dipstick being careful not to come in contact with any hot components of the engine.
- Wipe the dipstick with a clean cloth.
- Reinsert the dipstick - pushing it in as far as it will go. Then pull it out and observe oil level. If the oil level is near or below the low marker, remove the oil filler cap and add small amounts of the recommended oil, continually checking the dipstick as to not overfill. Approximately ½ litre between minimum and maximum.
- Replace the dipstick and fasten the oil filler cap.
- Close the bonnet.

Oil Filters

Your vehicles oil filter traps minute metal and other foreign particles in the engine lubricating system to avoid premature wear and tear. The oil filter is replaced at every scheduled service interval to promote long engine life. Refer to your owners handbook for your vehicles service schedule.
