Tyres

Your Volkswagen is factory equipped with tyres which offer optimum handling stability and performance under normal driving conditions. Tyres are the only contact between your vehicle and the road and allow your vehicle to accelerate, corner and stop. It is paramount to look after your tyres to ensure the vehicle responds accurately to the drivers input. Like many other vehicle components some simple tyre checks can be undertaken and observed.

Tyre pressure

- Always have your tyres inflated to the correct tyre pressure including the spare tyre.
- Check the tyre pressures with an accurate tyre gauge.
- It is recommended that you should check tyre pressures every two weeks.
- Always check your tyres when they are cold.
- Ensure that each tyre has a protective valve cap to avoid dust and moisture accumulating in the valve.
- Having the right tyre pressures will improve your fuel efficiency and provide optimal handling.
- Visually check for any cuts, bulges abrasions and or excessive wear and tear, and if concerned change the tyre with the spare or contact your local Volkswagen Service Centre.
- Keep grease, oil and fuel off the tyres.
- Incorrect tyre pressure can result in blown tyres, accidents, injury and fatal injury.
Checking Tyre Pressure

Checking Tyre Pressure

Tyre pressures can be adjusted manually at any service station or visit your local Volkswagen Service Centre. Remove the valve cap and place the air pressure gauge over the valve. Inflate each tyre to the recommended tyre pressure as specified on the tyre placard.

Tyre wear indicators

Every tyre has what's called tread wear indicators. These indicators are situated on the face of the tyre and determine the tyre wear. There is a legal requirement in Australia that you must have a certain level of tread on each tyre. For further information relating to your states legal requirements, contact your local roads and traffic authority.

Ageing of Tyres

Tyre life greatly depends on your individual driving style. To prolong your tyres life, follow some of the below tips:

- Drive smoothly and gently, avoiding any over exertion on the tyres including sharp turns, hard breaking or accelerating.
- Regularly rotate your tyres. (refer to the owners manual for tyre rotation guidance)
- Have your tyres regularly balanced and aligned. Incorrect wheel alignment causes excessive tyre wear, impairing the safety of the vehicle. You should have the wheel alignment checked by a qualified dealership if tyres show excessive wear.
- After any hard impact, inspect your tyres for any damage or loss of pressure, or have your local Volkswagen Service Centre inspect them.

Replacing Tyres

Tyres should be replaced when:
- The tread is below the legal limit.
- Any fraying, cuts, bulges or damage is visible on the tyre.
- The rubber is cracking or showing signs of deterioration.
