Volkswagen Australia has taken the first step toward carbon neutrality by offsetting its company vehicles for a period of 12 months.
The combined 238 vehicles from Volkswagen Passenger Vehicle employee cars, marketing and press fleets, Commercial Vehicle use plus those allocated to the Sydney Swans make a total CO2 offset of 584 tonnes – the equivalent of a vehicle travelling 83 times around the globe or 222 times around Australia.
This step has been made in collaboration with Green Collar and its subsidiary Go Neutral, which develops and manages, carbon neutralisation projects around land-based environmental restoration projects nationwide, primarily in the regeneration of Australian native trees, grasses, flora and the soil.
Go Neutral says: “Every car that goes neutral is making a difference. And the more people that join the movement, the more difference it makes.”
Its stated goal is to make 1 million cars in Australian carbon neutral.
Director of Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Michal Szaniecki said: “We make this announcement to raise awareness, to demonstrate that the carbon neutralisation of vehicles is by no means cost prohibitive. Certainly Volkswagen should do this; the point is that we all can.”
“While awaiting the game changing ID4 and ID5 fully electric vehicles arriving soon in Australia, Volkswagen with its retailers will prepare numerous other CO2-neutral initiatives available to all Australians, on its mission to democratise modern and sustainable mobility for future generations.”
Mr Szaniecki said that the next step in collaboration of GoNeutral is the creation of a public facing platform on Volkswagen’s website that will offer the brand’s customers the opportunity to offset their personal vehicles.
“This will be a matter of a small weekly amount – some $2-$3, or less than a coffee,” he said.
